Compare exact order codes, not brands alone. Check detection capability rather than beam spacing, protective height and end zones, range, response time, output interface, connector pinout and the required Type/PL/SIL evidence. A similar housing does not establish electrical or functional interchangeability.

Use the safety light curtain selection range to shortlist candidates, then compare the original and proposed model manuals. Document any changes to mounting, safety distance, logic and validation; do not assume a universal drop-in replacement or a guaranteed lead time.

The risk assessment and applicable machine standard determine the required safety performance. Type 2 devices can support up to PL c / SIL 1; Type 4 devices can support up to PL e / SIL 3 where the exact device evidence and integration permit. Neither label alone validates the complete sensor–logic–actuator safety function.

The Type 2 and Type 4 comparison explains the fault-detection and testing distinction. Do not select a Type solely from a machine name, industry label or claim that an injury would be reversible.

First establish the press type, stopping capability, access paths, applicable machine standard and required safety performance. A presence-sensing device cannot provide point-of-operation protection on a full-revolution clutch press that cannot stop its dangerous stroke. Confirm any muting, blanking, reset or feedback function in the selected device and controller instructions. DQM measurement products and DLD/SDLD ordinary LiDAR must not be treated as certified personnel-protection devices. ST27 is the confirmed Type 3 / PL d / SIL 2 safety scanner; its specific suitability, interface and complete installation still require verification.

Start with the applicable edition and geometry, measured worst-case machine stopping time, all relevant sensor/interface/control delays and detection capability. The familiar S = K × T + C expression introduces a calculation; the legacy 8 × (d − 14) reach-through term is not a universal reach-over or whole-body-access formula.

The ISO 13855 safety-distance guide explains the scope and required records. Check the current ISO 13855:2024 method and every access route. Do not reuse a hypothetical DQA response time or a calculator result as an approved installation distance.

Match an ordinary sensor's sourcing or sinking output to the exact input module and its common-terminal arrangement, not the PLC brand or country. A fourth wire can have several functions; wire colours and connector pin numbers must be verified against the exact order-code manual.

For ordinary detection, consult the PNP/NPN proximity-sensor wiring guide. For protective devices, use the light curtain installation and wiring index. Where the selected curtain has two protective OSSDs, both must be evaluated by compatible safety-rated inputs; an ordinary PLC input or a combined single channel is not a substitute.

Make the machine safe before adjustment. Check bracket stability, optical-axis alignment, lens contamination, supply quality, diagnostic codes, reflective surfaces and cross-talk using the exact manufacturer's procedure. Do not assume every trip is misalignment or every model has the same LED bar.

Follow the light curtain alignment and troubleshooting guide, then repeat the specified test-piece and safety-function checks. Do not bypass the protective outputs or add unapproved filters, shrouds or a claimed IP69K enclosure to suppress trips.

Check the model-specific download center and the selected product page for currently available files. PDF, DWG/DXF and STEP availability depends on the model and revision; not every product has every format online.
